Grants galore!

With a ton of money raised, it’s been a huge week for many online learning efforts. Here is a partial list of the goings-on:

  1. Codecademy: Raises another $10 million in funding from the likes of Index Ventures, Union Square Ventures, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Richard Branson, bringing its total to $12.5 million!
  2. Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation announces $9 million in grants to support breakthrough learning models in postsecondary education. This includes $3.3 million to EDUCAUSE, $3 million to MyCollege Foundation, $1 million to edX, $1 million to the New Community College at CUNY, $500,000 to University of the People, $450,000 to the League for Innovation in the Community College.
  3. UniversityNow: Raises $17 million in a new venture capital round led by University Ventures Fund and Bertelsmann AG. In total, it has raised $21.5 million. Additionally, it raised $300,000 in grant funding this week from Next Generation Learning Challenges, which is backed by the Gates Foundation.

Of course, all this money is going to be put to good use.
